Boxing

WHAT IS IT?

Boxing is effectively a combat between two competitors who attempt to land punches on one another in a fenced off square ring with judges scoring points as blows are landed.

Participants wear padded gloves and spar in protective head-gear to minimise the possibility of injury. But you can also box as a workout without ever hitting anyone (or being hit yourself).

Most local gyms also offer boxing style workouts as part of their usual class timetable, and many have sessions just for women.

WHY IS IT GOOD FOR ME?

Boxing training provides some of the best all-over body conditioning you can get including:

  • Improved heart and lung function
  • Muscle toning and increased energy
  • Make the Weight schemes are also popular, helping people to achieve realistic and attainable weight goals through boxing training
  • Boxing gyms often have a great feeling of community, so it can be a very sociable sport

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Individual sessions usually cost around £3 to £5 and many clubs offer affordable subscriptions. Contact clubs directly to ask about fees or subscriptions.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?

  • A sports bra is essential, and you should train in clothing you feel comfortable in. A t shirt or vest and leggings, tracksuit bottoms or shorts is usually acceptable for beginners
  • If you attend a taster session, the club will usually provide you with gloves. Bag gloves are inexpensive and available at most sports shops
  • To spar or compete you will need a gum shield
  • You can buy specialist boxing boots, but for beginners, a pair of trainers with good support is usually good enough
  • Bandages help protect the hands and knuckles, but consult your club
